Chindongo bellicosus "Nakantenga"

Chindongo bellicosus (formerly known as Pseudotropheus sp."elongatus slab") can be found near the Maleri Islands, Nakantenga Island, Mumbo Island and Thumbi West. At these locations you can come across several geographic variants of this species. They are living there in rocky environments on depths till at 30 meters and most of the times they can be found on top of large boulders where they pretty aggressive defend their "algae garden". The examples shown here are F2 offspring of parental fish from Nakantenga Island.

In the lake the males of these species can grow to 10 cm, in the aquarium however they can grow a little taller because of a good feeding. The males can then grow to about 11 cm, females grow to about 8 cm.

Chindongo bellicosus can behave intolerant against equal species and other inhabitants in an aquarium as soon as they start to defend a territory. You can best keep this species with multiple females and other mbunas in an aquarium with a lot of hiding places.

In the lake they are mainly feeding themselves with algae which they find on the rocks and probably also with plankton. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix. Food rich of algae like spirulina pellets or flakes is very important to them so this should not be missing on their menu.
